The tables were turned on Daily Echo staffers earlier in December when IndyStar editorial columnist Gary Varvel visited the SHS Student Media newsroom to talk to staff members about his experiences in journalism and also gathered information for a column and video report for the IndyStar just released Dec. 20.
Near the end of the visit, the talk turned to the most memorable quotes of the conversation.
“Writers don’t have writers block,” Varvel said. “If you are a writer you keep on writing. Sometimes you just have really bad days.”
“Even when I get told ‘no’ or that my cartoon won’t work; I try to see how I can make it better,
Varvel added. “If you are passionate about something, then do it.”
“We sit in a circle and discuss the good and bad things so we can improve the next copy,” said editor-in-chief Bailey Jones.
“We care,” said Alessandro Sosa, design and entertainment editor. “We care about the product and the quality of our newspaper.”
“What you guys are doing here is amazing,” Varvel said.
